"WHAT IS IN A NAME"
By Angela Duncan
In reading my bible to find the names of God and His Son, Jesus I
found that the names given were not simply names. Each name honored God and Jesus
for who They were and what They did for humankind. Some names were for both Jesus and God,
like Redeemer, or Savior. I however, found so many names and each told of an attribute of
our God and Jesus, I could not list them all. I will make a list with the meaning
although most are self evident. In our bible sometimes when it says God, and then it
will tell you about what He did or who He is, while in the Hebrew the name itself
denotes what He did and, or who He is. The Names of God I've taken from the O.T.,
whereas for Jesus I just used the N.T..
THE NAMES OF GOD
YHWH - (Yahweh) Self-existent, Self-created Ex. 3:14 "I Am that I Am."
ELOHIM - Strong one, ( this name is plural) In the Hebrew language there are three
words for numbers, singular meaning 1, dual meaning 2 and plural meaning 3 or more.
In this name the plural does allow for the subsequent revelation of the Trinity in the N.T.,
but does not teach the Trinity. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit,
3 distinct personalities, one Person, the Godhead Ex.18:11
ADONAI - Lord, this name indicates the master-servant relationship.
REDEEMER - The King, eternal Potentate Ps. 19:14
FATHER - Care giver, protector, provider. Ps. 103:13
The following are compound names given God in the O.T.
EL ELYON - Most high the strongest strong one. Isa. 14:14
EL SHADDAI - Almighty God Gen. 17:1
EL ROI - The strong One who sees. Gen. 16:13
EL OLAM - Everlasting God. Isa. 40:28
HOLY ONE - Sacred authority Isa. 20:25
JEHOVAH JIREH - The Lord will provide Gen. 22:13/14
JEHOVAH SHALOM - The Lord is peace Jud. 6:24
JEHOVAH SABBAOH - The Lord of Hosts 1 Sam. 1:3
The Names given to Jesus. In the N.T. the Names given to Christ surround who
He is and His purpose. I've kept to the N.T. for two reasons, the first is the number
of names in both testaments. The second I keep to His first coming and the purpose
there of.
Beginning with His name,
JESUS - in Hebrew it is JESHUA or JOSHUA - meaning The Lord is salvation. JESUS comes
from the Greek. Mt.1:1
CHRIST - This comes from the Greek. In the Hebrew it is MESHIAH, or MESSIAH, the
meaning ANOINTED ONE.
JESUS OF NAZARETH KING OF THE JEWS, the sign Pilate wrote and had the Roman guards place
it above His head on the cross. Jn.19:19
LOGOS or WORD - Jesus was the Word of creation. Jn.1:1/4 -Gen.1:1
THE SON OF GOD - His deity - the Alpha and the Omega Mt.16:16
THE SON OF MAN - His relationship to mankind. Lk.19:10
THE SON OF DAVID - In relation to prophesy and humanity Mk.10:47
This is the most popular messianic title.
GOD - Shows His preexistence and in the creation Jn.10:30-Lk.10:18
LORD - Shepherd to His flock. Mt.22:43/44
THE LAMB OF GOD - His sacrifice for our salvation. Jn.1:29
THE CORNERSTONE - Christ holds everything together. Eph.2:19/22
HIGH PRIEST - The royal priesthood, Heb.14:14/15 Some believe that Melchizedek
the high priest was Jesus. Gen.14:18
BRIDEGROOM - Be prepared for His second coming Mt.25:1
SERVANT - He came to serve as a sacrifice for our sins. Mt.20:26/28
THE LIGHT THE WAY THE TRUTH - These names describe Jesus, He brought to light the
prophesy of the O.T. - He is the only way to Heaven - He is the One True Savior. Jn.14:6
KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS - When Jesus appeared on a white horse, on His robe
and on His thigh these words were written. This is the second coming of
Christ, as a Warrior and a King. Rev.19:16
