"From a Techno-Phobic"
April Boyer

(No offense to anyone)

I'm so confused! Here I thought that because I am computer literate, run my own website, and a blog and can Facebook with relative intelligence, I was in the right lane.

Yet, every week, authors are expected to own and operate another new electronic device in order to successfully promote their books or ministry/business. They are also expected to give away some of said books!

It has been determined that social networking is the best tool available to connect author to reader. You'd better learn the language. Now it is possible to keep connected remotely to your Facebook and communicate with your fans, agents, editors and publisher through devices such as iPads, iPhones or BlackBerry. Twittering has become as crucial as rubbing elbows with the board members of your publishing house.

*Note to self - your pre-2009 spellchecker has not caught up to recognizing facebook, ipad or iphone.

I wonder how it all happened. I wonder if we would still read and write without these electronic tools. I wonder when it became so necessary to "network socially" so frequently, and to remain connected to everyone in your (now much larger) world as if attached by an umbilical cord? You can upload a post to your FB profile using your mobile phone. I wonder if things are moving fast enough. I wonder . . .

Authors could easily support the economy by purchasing the latest gadget and keeping in supply the batteries necessary to run them.

I was just getting used to being amazed at being able to download my pictures from my digital camera to my computer. I was spoiled by the ability to photo shop images that weren't as good as I liked them to be, and then uploading them to Walmart where I could order only those I liked.

I thought I was blessed to own extra camera cards, an electronic frame slide display and flash drives I can carry on my key chain.

Now some games, and applications include the ability to file documents, research on the internet, track your health record, record your own voice to pre-programmed and corrected pitch -music, and map out your destination with a GPS are available on your iPhone or iPad.
In addition, you can balance your checking account
and follow area weather forecast, all in the palm of your hand.

I also wonder if the human race will lose the ability to communicate audibly, when texting is so cheap?

Shopping list: Let me see,
1) A laptop computer- because I have yet to own one, and I do want one. Don't I? Maybe I should skip that and go straight to an iPad. Or iPod, iPhone, or Typepad? Is an Alpha Smart passé ?

2) Adobe e-book writer. Oh wait - is that past tense? Technology is available to allow you to write your own book via Kindle.

3) A bluetooth for my cell phone, so I can walk, talk, and chew gum at the same time, and even conference call. Is my cell phone a dinosaur now too? I don't take photos with it, play games, connect to the internet, store boo coo music, file documents on it, toast my breakfast or dress my kids with it. Am I hopelessly behind?

4) A Kindle to download 450,000 titles, if I so wish, "with ease in handling, and with a screen that reads like a book, without glare". This device reduces paper waste, publishing cost and middlemen.

Will life ever be the same?

Hbr 13:8 "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."

*When I asked what their favorite digital or electronic tools are, these authors answered:

One of my favorite things is my digital recorder. I use it to record devotions and prayers. I also use it with my children's writing. Recording helps me to polish my rhythm and rhyme. I like Twitter, but use Facebook more than any other social network". -Donna S

"The MacBook Pro, the iPhone, the Kindle. Facebook is where I interact most with my readers; I also blog via Typepad for the same reason, to interact with readers." - Robin H, Terri B agreeing.

"The thing I find the least useful is Twitter. I'm not sure I understand the point of it, though I do use it some". - Terri B

"The only social network I am on now is FB. Closed all the others--way too time consuming". -Robin B

"Just to show how different we all are, the electronic device that is most helpful to my writing is my Game Boy Advanced" Everyone has their own prayer room, and one of mine is playing solitaire on my Game Boy Advanced. It frees my mind and welcomes the Lord in. Many of my ideas as a writer come from that time, along with early morning time with the Lord, and when I'm on a walk.. - Jerry R
